The overall goals for this part of the Berzelii Centre are defined from needs and new knowledge in medical, biological, pharmaceutical and chemical forefront research. We deal with fundamental developments in separation and detection science combined with applications in clinical neuroscience with the common aim to enable solutions to diverse analytical problems. The research projects represent novel analytical possibilities for sampling, enrichment, non-discriminating sample transfer, selective and efficient separation, detection, data handling and validation.


Today the availability of several powerful separation and MS techniques for proteomic analyses allows for screening and discovery of huge numbers of proteins, potentially related to pathways and pathomechanisms of disorders. With these new techniques follow high demands on accurate procedures for sampling, sample preparation, data acquisition and data analysis. Accordingly, much debate concerns the issue of good experimental design to meet the demands of clinical proteomics, and the Human Proteome Organisation Proteomics Standard Initiative (HUPO-PSI) recently published guidelines for standardizing the reporting of proteomic data. We have chosen not to follow the traditional proteomics route including 2D-PAGE gel electrophoresis but instead use multidimensional liquid separation and high-resolution MS technology for qualitative and quantitative measurements. This type of methodology enables detection of potential protein biomarkers of femtomolar or lower concentrations, in small volumes of serum and CSF.
