Goals in Chronic Pain research area:

Expected outcome

This project aims to build knowledge about the pathophysiology of chronic pain with the goal to find new diagnostic markers for early biochemical characterization of patients suffering from chronic pain. The outcome is believed to be essential also for the development of new relevant therapeutic strategies.

Commercial aspects

The chronic pain market is segmented in a number of indications, and within each indication, response to pharmacological treatment is limited and in many conditions unpredictable with current diagnostic tools. From the drug industrial perspective, it is critical to build a toolbox for better, mechanism-based segmentation of chronic pain patients to allow the design of more predictive clinical trials as well as better positioning of new analgesics post launch. Connected to this is the need for improved target validation and more predictive animal models.
